Major Test matches will be moved to Perth Stadium with the new venue a chance to host the Ashes Test in late 2017.

It’s planned the WACA Ground will be redeveloped into a boutique venue to host lower-drawing matches. Test matches against England, India and South Africa will be moved to the new stadium at Burswood.

The $1.2 billion 60,000-seat stadium was originally due to open in time for the 2018 AFL season, however it is ahead of schedule and is a chance to host the Ashes Test against England in late 2017.

The Western Australian Cricket Association has already confirmed the move of major matches. Big Bash League matches are also set to move to the new stadium.

The WACA Ground will continue to host Sheffield Shield matches, and Test and one-day internationals not involving the major Test playing nations.

The redevelopment of the WACA is expected to cost between $150-200 million and will see it reduced to a capacity of 10-15,000. It is also set to return to an oval shape allowing for WAFL matches to be played there.

WACA chairman Sam Gannon said redeveloping the WACA into a boutique ground - and moving blockbuster matches to the new Burswood stadium - was critical for the survival of the WACA Ground.

“To do nothing was not an option,” Gannon said.

WACA chief executive Christina Matthews predicted it would take about 10 years to complete all stages of the redevelopment.

Matthews guaranteed the iconic WACA pitches wouldn’t be dug up to accommodate football being played at the ground.
