No commercial name for new Perth Stadium

The new 60,000-seat Perth Stadium under construction at Burswood will not have a commercial name and will open as Perth Stadium in 2018.

Premier Colin Barnett today announced the name and also thanked members of the public for their input.

“We received several suggestions and the overwhelming feedback was that the name should reflect Perth and WA, so I’m delighted with this outcome which capitalises on the stadium’s tourism value for the State,” Mr Barnett said.

“Having the name of the host city within the name of that city’s most significant big sports grounds is common practice around the world.  Think of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Adelaide Oval and the Singapore Sports Hub as very well-known examples.

Construction of the five-level, 60,000-seat stadium on the Burswood Peninsula is now 25 per cent complete and remains on schedule to open for the start of the 2018 AFL season.

The process to secure the stadium operator is also well under way and the contract is expected to be awarded in early 2016.

Meanwhile, the Stadium Station construction commenced earlier this month and will be completed by the end of 2017 and construction of the Swan River Pedestrian Bridge is scheduled to commence before the end of 2015.
