New name on the way for Metricon Stadium
Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium will have a new name in 2023, with the existing 12-year naming-rights partnership with the Gold Coast Suns coming to an end.
The 22,500-capacity venue, previously known as Carrara Stadium, has been branded Metricon Stadium since its re-opening in 2011 following the $144 million redevelopment.
The home builder initially signed a five year deal for naming rights of the stadium, before signing extensions of the partnership in 2016 and again in 2019. It’s believed Metricon has contributed $11 million to the club throughout the partnership.
A statement released by Metricon confirmed the stadium would change its name after this year.
“We are very proud to have partnered with the Suns for more than 12 years, however it’s now time for Metricon to look at new opportunities which best suit the profile and future of the business.
“Although we are opting to not renew the naming rights for the stadium, we do hope to continue our connection and are exploring other commercial ways the relationship can continue.”
The Gold Coast Suns will now look to go to market to explore potential replacements for the vacant naming-rights of the stadium.
“For over twelve years, Metricon Homes has been a proud partner of the Gold Coast Suns through the good times and the tough times,” a statement from the club said.
“We want to thank Metricon Homes for that support and we appreciate everything they have done for the Gold Coast Suns and Gold Coast community in helping to establish a world-renowned stadium facility for not only major sporting events and concerts but also local community events.
“We’re really confident where the club is heading and we will have some exciting announcements to make in the near future.”
Metricon Stadium hosts AFL home games for the Gold Coast Suns, AFLW games for the Suns and Brisbane Lions, cricket, concerts and community events.
In 2020, the venue became the AFL’s second home of football, hosting over 40 AFL matches, including finals, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Opened as Carrara Oval in 1987, the ground was given a $144 million makeover in 2011, converting it into an all-seater stadium. The venue was the main stadium for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, with its capacity temporarily boosted to 40,000.
